The step up from HSK 1: how the HSK 2 paper is built and scored, what each listening and reading part asks for, the grammar the level introduces including 了, 过, 比 and 得, and the vocabulary that carries it.
- What does HSK stand for?
- 汉语水平考试, the Chinese Proficiency Test. It is the standardised test of Mandarin for non-native speakers, administered by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation together with Chinese Testing International.
- How many levels does the HSK ladder have?
- Six in the version in widest use, from HSK 1 for beginners to HSK 6. A newer grading standard defines nine levels and adds HSK 7 to 9 for advanced learners, while levels 1 to 6 remain the usual route.
- How much vocabulary does HSK 2 assume?
- Around three hundred words in total, which is the HSK 1 list of about one hundred and fifty plus about the same number again. Grammar broadens more than vocabulary does at this step.
- How many questions are on the HSK 2 paper, and how are they split?
- Sixty in total: thirty five listening questions and twenty five reading questions. The whole sitting takes under an hour including the time to fill in your details.
- How is HSK 2 scored, and what is the pass mark?
- Out of two hundred, with one hundred available in listening and one hundred in reading. A total of one hundred and twenty is the pass.
- Is pinyin printed on the HSK 2 paper?
- Yes. At HSK 1 and HSK 2 the pinyin is printed above the characters throughout the paper, so an unfamiliar character does not block a candidate who reads pinyin fluently.
- How many times is each HSK 2 listening recording played?
- Twice. Both HSK 1 and HSK 2 play every listening item a second time, which is not the case at the higher levels.
- What happens after the listening section at HSK 2?
- A few minutes are given to transfer your listening answers to the answer sheet before reading begins. Marks are made in pencil, and a 2B pencil reads most reliably.
- What does the first part of HSK 2 listening ask?
- You hear a short sentence and decide whether the printed picture matches it, marking a tick or a cross. Usually one detail decides it.
- What does the second part of HSK 2 listening ask?
- You hear a short dialogue and choose which of several pictures it describes. The pictures share a theme, so the difference is one object, one action or one place.
- What do the third and fourth parts of HSK 2 listening ask?
- Both play a dialogue and then a spoken question, with three printed answer options. The fourth part uses a longer dialogue with more turns, so the answer often depends on what the second speaker says.
- What does the first part of HSK 2 reading ask?
- You match each sentence to the picture it describes, from a shared set. The set is deliberately close, so a single verb or object decides the match.
- What does the word bank part of HSK 2 reading ask?
- A set of sentences each has a gap, and you choose a word for each from a shared list. Grammar, not just meaning, decides most answers, because only one word class can fill the slot.
- What is the true or false part of HSK 2 reading?
- You read a short passage and then decide whether a following statement matches it. The statement often restates the passage in different words, or changes one detail.
- What is the matching part of HSK 2 reading?
- Each question is a line of dialogue and you choose the reply that answers it, from a shared list. The questions and replies come in two groups of five.
- Is speaking tested in HSK 2?
- No. The HSK written test covers listening and reading only. Speaking is assessed by the separate HSKK, the Chinese Proficiency Spoken Test, which has its own beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.
- How long are HSK results usually accepted?
- Score reports are commonly treated as valid for two years from the test date by universities and employers, though the report itself is issued once and not reissued.
- Is there a penalty for a wrong answer on the HSK?
- No. Only correct answers earn marks, so a blank and a wrong answer cost the same. Every question should be filled in.
- What should you bring to an HSK sitting?
- The admission ticket, a valid photo identity document and a 2B pencil with an eraser. Phones and dictionaries are not allowed in the room.
- What is the biggest change from HSK 1 to HSK 2?
- Sentence length and grammar. HSK 2 introduces comparison with 比, completed and experienced action with 了 and 过, degree complements with 得, and result complements, so sentences carry more structure rather than only more words.
- How should study time be split for HSK 2?
- Towards listening, which carries thirty five of the sixty questions, and towards the grammar patterns that appear in both sections. Character writing is not tested at all.
- Why is HSK 2 a useful checkpoint even if you are aiming higher?
- Because it certifies the grammar core, 了, 过, 比, 得 and the result complements, that every later level builds on. HSK 3 assumes all of it without revisiting it.
- 了 placed after a verb: what does it mark?
- Completion of an action, not past tense. It says the action was carried through, and it can refer to the future as easily as the past.
- 了 placed at the end of a sentence: what does it mark?
- A change of state or a new situation, meaning something has become true that was not true before.
- 过
- Marks an experience: you have done something at least once at some point.
- 正在
- Marks an action in progress, often with 呢 at the end of the sentence for a softer tone.
- 比
- The comparison marker: A 比 B plus an adjective, with no 很 before the adjective.
- 得
- Links a verb to a description of how well or how much it is done, the degree complement.
- 离
- Marks distance from a place, used with 远 and 近.
- 从
- From: marks the starting point of a movement or a period, often paired with 到.
