How the Instituto Cervantes Spanish diploma works: the two scoring groups and what it takes to pass each, the reading, listening, writing and oral tasks at A2 to B2, and the Spanish grammar and register those tasks are marked on.

What does DELE stand for, and who awards it?
Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera. They are awarded by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of Spain's Ministry of Education, with the Universidad de Salamanca collaborating on the design and the marking.
Which levels does the DELE cover?
Six, following the Common European Framework: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2. There are also school versions at the lower levels for adolescent candidates.
Do DELE diplomas expire?
No. A DELE diploma has unlimited validity. An institution may still ask for a recent qualification, but the diploma itself is permanent.
How is the DELE different from the SIELE?
SIELE is an electronic multilevel test that returns a score and a certificate valid for a limited period. DELE is a pass or fail diploma at one named level, valid for life.
How are the four DELE tests grouped?
Into two groups. Group one covers the comprehension skills, comprensión de lectura and comprensión auditiva. Group two covers production and interaction, expresión e interacción escritas and expresión e interacción orales.
How is a DELE result calculated?
Each group is scored out of fifty, giving one hundred in total. To pass you need at least thirty out of fifty in each group. The result is reported as apto or no apto.
What does apto mean on a DELE result?
Pass. The result is not a numerical grade: it states apto or no apto, with the group scores shown. There is no distinction, merit or percentage on the diploma.
How is the C2 exam structured differently?
C2 does not use the four test, two group structure. It has three tests that combine skills, each with its own minimum, so reading, listening, writing and speaking are assessed in integrated tasks rather than separately.
Can you retake only the group you failed?
No. A DELE session is passed or failed as a whole, and there is no partial credit carried to a later session. The entire level is re-sat.
When can you sit the DELE?
On the dates in the official calendar, which offers several sessions a year, though not every level is available in every session or at every centre.
What is required for Spanish nationality by residence?
Applicants are normally asked for a DELE at a specified minimum level together with the CCSE, the test of constitutional and sociocultural knowledge of Spain. The required level is set by regulation, so confirm it officially before booking.
What is the DELE escolar?
A version of the diploma for adolescent candidates, offered at the lower levels with topics suited to school age test takers. The diploma and the level are the same as the general version.
Where are the exact task counts and timings published?
In the Guía del examen and the especificaciones for each level, published by the Instituto Cervantes. Task numbers and timings differ by level and are revised from time to time, so the official document governs.
What is not allowed in the DELE exam room?
Dictionaries, phones, notes and any electronic device. Only the exam paper, the answer sheet and an approved writing implement are permitted.
How is the oral exam organised?
There is a preparation period in a separate room for the tasks that require it, and then the exam itself with an examiner who conducts the conversation. A second examiner may assess.
What does a DELE reading paper typically contain?
Several tasks of different kinds: matching statements to short texts, multiple choice on a longer text, reconstructing a text by placing removed fragments, and a cloze testing grammar and vocabulary.
How do you approach the fragment insertion task?
By reading the sentences either side of each gap and looking for the grammatical and referential links: a pronoun, a connector, a repeated noun, a time expression.
What does the cloze task at the end of a reading paper test?
Grammar and vocabulary in context: prepositions, connectors, verb forms and set phrases. The three options are usually all real words, and only one fits the structure.
Why is time management critical in DELE reading?
Because the reading test is long and the last task is often the shortest to answer. Candidates who read the long text too slowly lose easy marks at the end.
How do you answer a multiple choice question on a long Spanish text?
By finding the paragraph the question refers to, reading it closely, and then testing each option against it. Options are written to be plausible if you rely on memory of the whole text.
How do you tell the writer's opinion from a view they report?
By watching the reporting verbs and the distancing markers: según algunos, hay quien sostiene, se ha dicho que, supuestamente. The writer's own view carries evaluative language instead.
What do DELE listening tasks typically involve?
Short messages and announcements, a monologue such as a news item or a talk, a conversation between two speakers, and a matching task where several short speakers are matched to statements.
How many times are DELE listening recordings played?
Each recording is played more than once at the lower levels and the number of playings is announced on the audio. The paper states how many times each task will be heard.
What should you do while the listening instructions are read?
Read ahead through the questions for that task and, where the options are printed, work out what kind of answer each one is: a time, a reason, an opinion, a place.
Which Spanish sounds cause the most listening errors?
Unstressed vowels that never reduce, the fast linking of words across boundaries, and the fall of intervocalic d in speech, so cansado can sound like cansao in many accents.
Which numbers and quantities cause listening errors in Spanish?
Numbers in the hundreds and thousands, dates read as full years, and prices with decimals. The pairs that trip candidates are sesenta and setenta, and cincuenta and sesenta at speed.
How many writing tasks does a DELE level normally have, and what are they based on?
Two, and both are based on input material rather than a bare topic: a text, a recording, a chart, a message or a set of notes. Using that input is part of the task.
What is the most common reason a DELE writing task loses marks?
Not doing everything the instruction asks. The prompt names a text type, a reader, a purpose and often several points to cover, and the marking grid checks each one.
How do you open and close a formal Spanish letter?
Open with Estimado señor or Estimada señora, or Estimados señores when the reader is unknown. Close with a formula such as Le saludo atentamente or Atentamente, and use usted throughout.
How do you open and close an informal Spanish message?
With Hola plus the name, or Querido and Querida for a letter, and close with Un abrazo, Un beso, or Hasta pronto. Tú forms are used throughout.
